Built by King Kashyapa (477 - 495 AD), Sigiriya is a 200m high granite peak located in the central province of Sri Lanka. On top of the rock are the ruins of the palace built by the king. About halfway up is a gateway built in the structure of a huge lion giving the name “Lion Rock” to the site. Ruins of the ancient kingdom, ravishing ponds, and structures surround the Lion Rock. This dignified cultural heritage site was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982. It takes a 4.5hour (approx) journey from Colombo, passing the beautiful city of Dambulla to reach Sigiriya. Sigiriya is no wonder an adventurous tour to take in Sri Lanka.
